Depression therapy · St. Catharines & across Ontario

Therapy for depression, when everything works except you.

The lunches get made. The deadlines get met. And somewhere along the way the colour drained out of it: flat, numb, far away from yourself. Depression therapy here is evidence-based, CBT-grounded work to help you find your footing again.

The signs

Depression doesn't always look like sadness. Often it looks like going through the motions.

Plenty of women arrive here still doing everything: working, parenting, showing up. What's missing is harder to point at. The wanting. The feeling. The sense that any of it is connected to you.

How many of these feel familiar?

If you found yourself nodding, that's not a character flaw. It's a nervous system that's been asked to carry too much for too long. This is exactly the work we do together.

This isn't about weakness or failure. Often, it's a sign that your system has been under stress for too long without enough support.

What's actually happening

Heaviness has a logic to it.

Depression gets described as sadness, but for many women it's closer to absence. Things that used to land, don't. Food, music, your kids' laughter: you register them from a distance, like news from another country. The clinical word is anhedonia. The lived version is going through a day you can't feel.

For the women this practice serves, it rarely arrives out of nowhere. It settles in after years of over-functioning: carrying everyone, deferring yourself, running on empty long past the point a system can sustain. Numbness is what a nervous system does when it's been overwhelmed for too long. It turns the volume down on everything, the painful and the good alike.

The heaviness also recruits your thinking. Depression tells convincing stories: that you're failing, that you're a burden, that this is simply who you are now. Those thoughts feel like facts. They aren't. Working with them (noticing them, testing them, loosening their grip) is where CBT earns its reputation, and it's a core part of the work here.

Over time, these patterns can leave you feeling disconnected from yourself, your relationships, and the life you're trying so hard to hold together.

Worth knowing: depression and burnout can look nearly identical from the inside, and they're often tangled together. If the heaviness hums with restlessness (racing thoughts, constant bracing), have a look at anxiety therapy too. You don't need to diagnose yourself first; finding the right starting point is part of the work.

Who this work is for

For the women still showing up.

This work is built for high-achieving women and moms whose depression hides behind competence. Nobody worries about you, because you're still delivering. You appear capable externally while carrying a mental and emotional load nobody sees, least of all the flatness underneath it.

And because you're still functioning, you keep waiting until it's “bad enough” to justify help. It doesn't need to get worse to count. It counts now.

  • The quiet fade. Not a crash, just a slow dimming, until you can't remember the last time something felt good.
  • Everyone else first. Years of putting yourself last, until your own needs stopped registering as needs.
  • The harsh narrator. An inner voice that would never be allowed to talk to your kids the way it talks to you.
  • The body's weight. Fatigue, slowness, a heaviness in the chest: depression lives in the body, not just the mood.
  • The distance. Present in the room, absent from your own life. The people you love feel a wall you never chose to build.

How it works here

Depression therapy that's structured, evidence-based, and humane.

This is not surface-level self-care or forcing yourself to “just think positive.” Positive thinking is exactly the advice depression is immune to. This works differently.

I

Lower the load

First, we make the week survivable. Small, honest adjustments and body-based regulation, because insight can't land in a system that's completely depleted.

II

Work the thoughts

CBT, done properly: catching the stories depression tells, testing them against reality, and loosening the grip of the harsh inner narrator. Skill by skill, week by week.

III

Reconnect the body

Somatic work for the numbness: gentle, body-based practices that help feeling return at a pace your system can handle.

IV

Rebuild what's yours

Using ACT, we reconnect you with what you actually value (not just what you're responsible for) and build a life that has you in it again.

What we work toward

What lighter can look like.

No promised timeline, and no one-size outcome. These are the kinds of goals we set together, and many women find that simply naming a direction is the first relief.

  • Moments that actually land, instead of passing at a distance
  • An inner voice that sounds more like an ally than a critic
  • Energy that returns as the load gets honest
  • Feeling connected to your people, not just responsible for them
  • Wanting things again, and letting yourself have some of them
  • A steadier floor under the hard days

Questions, answered

Asked before booking, answered plainly.

What does therapy for depression involve here?

The backbone is CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), one of the best-studied approaches for depression: noticing the thought patterns that feed the heaviness and gradually changing your relationship with them. Around it we add ACT, somatic work for the body's side of depression (the fatigue, the flatness), and trauma-informed work where the roots run deeper. It's structured and practical, never a lecture.

Is CBT actually effective for depression?

CBT is one of the most researched talk therapies for depression, and it's recommended in clinical guidelines as a first-line treatment. That doesn't make it magic, and it's not the only tool used here. But it gives the work a proven structure: specific skills, practised between sessions, reviewed together. Many women like that they can see what they're learning and why.

I can still get through my day. Is it really depression?

Depression doesn't always stop a life; often it just drains the colour out of one. High-functioning depression looks like doing everything you're supposed to do while feeling flat, numb, or far away from yourself. You don't need a diagnosis or any particular severity to reach out. If life has felt heavier than it should for too long, that's reason enough.

Is it depression or burnout?

From the inside they can look nearly identical: exhaustion, flatness, losing interest in things you used to enjoy. Burnout is usually tied to prolonged demand; depression can settle in more independently of circumstances. You don't need to untangle that before booking. Both are worked with here, and sorting out which is which is part of the early work.

Can depression therapy be done virtually?

Yes. Virtual sessions run over secure video and are available to Ontario residents, wherever you are in the province. A virtual session is $100. On the weeks when leaving the house feels like too much, the session can still happen, and those are often the weeks it matters most.

What if I need more than counselling?

Then we say so, plainly. Counselling works well alongside a family doctor's care, and if medication or a physician's assessment looks like a useful part of your support, Sarah will encourage that conversation rather than pretend one tool fits everything. And therapy is not crisis care: if you're in immediate danger, call 9-1-1, or call or text 9-8-8 for 24/7 crisis support.
